Transition programs give high school students with disabilities the opportunity to explore jobs and participate in vocational training experiences in real-world work environments.
These programs help ease the students’ passage from school to work after they graduate from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Students receive instruction in self-determination, self-advocacy and career planning, while participating in hands-on training in community work sites for part of their school day.
Project VICTORY (Vocational Instruction and Community Training Opportunities for Youth) is one of M-DCPS’ transition programs that focuses on training for students with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities, whose goal after high school is employment.
Project VICTORY teachers and job coaches prepare students for financial, personal and social independence through work-related experiences that cultivate employability skills essential for success in the workplace. Connecting students to employment training opportunities in the community through Project VICTORY has been part of our mission in the Department of Exceptional Student Education since 1986.
More than 10 Project VICTORY programs are provided in partnership with Publix Supermarket stores. As part of this community-based vocational education program students complete tasks in different store departments, learning skills specific to each area while working on time management and customer service skills. M-DCPS also collaborates with several municipalities, including the cities of Coral Gables, Hialeah and Miami Gardens, to provide Project VICTORY students with the opportunity to learn job skills within government office settings.
Community partners, such as South Florals, offer students the opportunity to learn specific job skills in a unique industry. Project VICTORY students at this location work on processing orders and help with inventory, while preparing flower arrangements.
As a top employer in Miami-Dade, M-DCPS also provides employment training to students through Project VICTORY at the school system’s Department of Transportation, where students learn job skills throughout the administration offices in the South Transportation center.
As students complete training in Project VICTORY for part of their school day, they prepare to either continue educational experiences in other programs or seek employment within the community. Transition Program teachers and Transition Specialists assist students with their resumes and prepare them for interviews. They also connect students with agencies, such as the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, which may provide support and services for young adults with disabilities as they transition to postsecondary settings.
