Miami-Dade School Board member Mary Blanco (District 7) joined students, families, and staff for the official ribbon-cutting of the new Cougar Zen Den at Kenwood K-8 Center. This dedicated space is designed to promote mindfulness, emotional health, and the holistic well-being of the student body.
The Cougar Zen Den provides a tranquil environment where students can practice mindfulness, regulate their emotions, and develop vital coping skills for personal growth.
This initiative was made possible through the dedication and generosity of the Kenwood K-8 Center PTSO.
Blanco expressed her sincere gratitude to the organization for its unwavering commitment to student wellness.
“The Cougar Zen Den recognizes that academic excellence is inextricably linked to mental well-being,” Blanco said. “By investing in spaces where students can reset and recharge, we are providing our children with the emotional resilience and tools they need to succeed inside the classroom and beyond.”
Blanco highlighted how the involvement of the Mental Health Club students added a special touch to the event, demonstrating the district’s commitment to ensuring every child feels valued and supported. She also thanked the school’s counseling team — the mental health coordinator, school psychologist, and social worker — for their collaborative efforts in bringing this initiative to life.
Blanco further commended the leadership of Kenwood K-8 Center principal Yolanda G. Oliu and assistant principal Dr. Gabriel Quintero for their vision in prioritizing mental health.
Additionally, she thanked the Miami-Dade County Public Schools South Region Office and the Office of School Choice and Parental Options for their continued support in fostering innovative and supportive educational environments across District 7.
