Miami-Dade School Board chair and District 6 representative Mari Tere Rojas, at the board meeting of Aug. 12, proffered agenda item H-9, endorsing the month of September 2025 as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).

The National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, observed in September by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), aims to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and connect individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts to treatment and support. Suicide, often linked to untreated mental health conditions, affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

While suicide prevention is a year-round effort, September serves as a dedicated time to promote open conversations, support those affected, and potentially save lives — because one honest conversation can make a difference.

Also, during the school board meeting of Aug. 12, Rojas proffered agenda item H-6, endorsing and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Miami-Dade County Public Schools from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

Hispanics are the largest ethnic minority in the United States (U.S.), comprising 18.5 percent of the population — over 61 million people — and are projected to grow to 111 million by 2060. In Miami-Dade County Public Schools, 76 percent of students are of Hispanic descent. This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” highlights the value of tradition and the promise of future contributions by Hispanics to the U.S.
