Juan Hernandez, the St. Brendan High School varsity boys basketball coach, knew he had a special group of young men when the season began.  Currently they are ranked number 1 in their 4A district, a district that includes Gulliver Prep, Key West, Killian, LaSalle and SLAM high schools.  Their current record of 17 – 5, puts them in a great position to finish 1st in the district.

When the coach was asked, what he believed made the difference this year, a significant gain from last year’s 14-11 record, coach Hernandez said, “The core group of our players are now juniors, combined with the freshman and sophomores that we currently have in the program makes for a very bright future for St. Brendan boys basketball.”

The upcoming 4A district tournament, which will be hosted by Sunset High School, will be tough and according to team captains, juniors Alex Kettle, Santiago Tovar and Nelson Rodriguez, they are confident they will do well, and all captains agreed with Santiago Tovar when he said, “We are a close knit group and have been dedicated all season, putting in extra work all year.”

With a group of determined young men, how far they advance is yet to be seen. According to Rodriguez and Tovar, “the toughest team in our district is Killian High School, but we think we can beat them.”  With their talent, overall development and dedication over the past year, this team has their eyes set on advancing well into the playoffs.
