At its recent regular monthly meeting, the Miami-Dade School Board commissioned construction management firms to complete General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects at three area middle schools.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB in 2012 to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety, and provide technology upgrades. The following are details of the projects:
Arvida Middle — JCI International Inc. (JCI) was commissioned as the construction management at-risk firm for the renovation project at Arvida Middle. The school, which was built in 1975, is comprised of six permanent buildings and has a capacity of 1,129 student stations.
The project involves replacing all the systems, ductwork, air handlers, sensors, etc., associated with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) scope, essential to building safe, working structures for human occupation. The school’s wooden stage flooring will be replaced; basketball courts will be regraded, and fire safety systems will be upgraded.
Total project allocation, $3.7 million; completion, August 2022; total sub-consultant S/MBE participation: 17.96 percent; total sub-consultant M/WBE participation: 7.73 percent.
George Washington Carver Middle — T&G Construction was commissioned as the construction management at-risk (CMR) firm for the renovations project at Carver Middle. Located in Coral Gables, the school was built in 1952 and currently is comprised of 13 buildings and has a capacity of 872 student stations.
The scope of work includes installing a new emergency management system; replacing the campus-wide fire alarm system; exterior and interior painting, and HVAC upgrades throughout the campus.
Total project allocation, $5.2 million; completion, August 2022; total sub-consultant S/MBE participation: 19.72 percent; total sub-consultant M/WBE participation: 18.62 percent.
Homestead Middle — Thornton Construction Company Inc. was commissioned as the construction management at-risk for the renovations at Homestead Middle. The project includes the complete renovation of the auditorium with new seating, flooring, lighting, sound system, stage curtain and pulley system, etc.
Renovations will include the science lab; replacement of windows, flooring, ceiling and lighting throughout the facility interior; exterior painting, and replacing drinking fountains with new ADA-compliant restrooms and water coolers.
Total project allocation, $8 million; completion, August 2022; total sub-consultant S/MBE participation: 17.81 percent; total sub-consultant M/WBE participation: 16.63 percent.
All scope shall include related repairs to civil, structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and finishes as required and in compliance with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M- DCPS) Design Standards.
