Miami-Dade School Board chair and District 6 representative Mari Tere Rojas, during the meeting of Dec. 17, 2025, proffered agenda item H-3, endorsing January as National Mentoring Month in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
Mentoring provides young people with care, guidance, and the reassurance that they are not alone, helping them feel valued and supported. Research confirms that high-quality mentoring relationships have a positive impact on personal, academic, and professional outcomes, connecting youth to growth, development, and opportunity.
National Mentoring Month was launched in 2002 by MENTOR in partnership with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to highlight the importance of mentoring and encourage individuals, organizations, and government entities to expand mentoring efforts.
Its goals include raising awareness of mentoring, recruiting new mentors — particularly for programs with waiting lists — and inspiring organizations to engage their members in mentoring initiatives.
There are many ways to participate in National Mentoring Month. Individuals may become mentors by sharing their knowledge and skills with youth in schools, communities, or workplaces. Supporters also can volunteer with or donate to mentoring programs, share mentoring stories on social media to inspire others, attend events and workshops to learn best practices, or educate themselves about the impact of mentoring on personal, educational, and career development.
National Mentoring Month is recognized nationwide through both in-person and virtual events. The Miami-Dade County School Board endorses January 2026 as National Mentoring Month in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
