Miami-Dade School Board member Mary Blanco at the meeting of Jan, 15, proffered agenda item H-7, requesting that the superintendent of schools endorse the Live Like Bella Foundation Superhero 5K on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Tropical Park.
The Live Like Bella Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2013 by the parents of Bella Rodriguez-Torres, who died of pediatric cancer at the age of 10. The Foundation provides assistance to families and children affected by childhood cancer. Specifically, donations to the foundation are used for on-going research, memorial support, compassionate use and in-treatment support to families.
Since its inception, Live Like Bella has provided over $6.5 million in financial assistance for families in 49 states and 37 countries. In addition, the foundation has allocated $37 million to fund lifesaving research and funded 66 clinical trials expanding the understanding of best care practices for pediatric patients.
The phrase “Live Like Bella,” coined by Bella’s parents, means to serve and help others.
Through the foundation, Bella’s family continues to honor Bella’s legacy by serving and helping children with cancer and their families.
On Feb. 8, the Live Like Bella Foundation will be hosting the Live Like Bella Superhero 5K at Tropical Park. The race commemorates and honors children battling cancer as the REAL superheroes. All funds raised through the Superhero 5K support the Foundation’s work.
“Living like Bella means strength to serve others with love, compassion, and hope. Live Like Bella teaches us that true superheroes are those who inspire us to act with kindness and empathy. With each step we take together in the Superhero 5K, we honor the legacy of a remarkable young hero, Bella, and unite to support families in their fight against pediatric cancer,” board member Blanco said.
