District 8 School Board member Monica Colucci and District 11 Miami-Dade County Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez hosted a family event on Thursday, Mar. 2, in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and National Read Across America Day.
Children enjoyed listening to classic Dr. Seuss stories read aloud by Colucci and a multitude of teacher volunteers. After story time, students engaged in arts and crafts and played games such as “Pin the Hat on the Cat.” District 8 families gathered as a community and together enjoyed free popcorn and cotton candy while watching the movie The Cat in the Hat, based on the famous children’s book written by Dr. Seuss.
“Quality children’s literature is not only a treasure for our children but an instrumental component of their education. Great stories bring families and communities together,” Colucci said. “Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez and I were able to witness this last evening as we partnered together to celebrate literacy and reading across our nation.”
The event was supported by the Miami-Dade Police Department, Miami-Dade Fire Department, Police Explorers, Miami Dade Parks and Recreation, the Education Fund and teacher volunteers.
Young and old had a wonderful time celebrating alongside family and friends.
The event took place at Westwind Lakes Park, 6805 SW 152 Ave., starting at 5 p.m.
