School Board Member Monica Colucci, District 8, joined Miami-Dade County Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez, District 11, during a tree planting celebration at Bowman Ashe/Doolin K-8 Center on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

A total of 81 trees were planted during the event, part of a broader effort and partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and Miami-Dade County which aims at increasing tree canopy cover in the county and improving environmental resiliency in the community.

The goal of this collaborative effort is to increase the local tree canopy to 30 percent, reflecting a shared vision for a more sustainable future, while protecting our population from the heat during our sunny Florida days.

“I take a lot of pride in this great partnership. It reflects our shared commitment to enhance our tree canopy,” Board Member Colucci said. “This is proof of what we can achieve when we work together toward a common goal.

“Our school district, the largest in Florida, plays a crucial role in this effort. This initiative will provide cooler and more comfortable spaces for all residents, including our wonderful students, teachers, and parents. I believe that today’s event will inspire others to join us in increasing our county’s tree canopy coverage by 30 percent,” Colucci added.
