School Board member recognizes Braddock’s champion swim team
Miami-Dade County School Board vice chair Monica Colucci honors the G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School Boys Swim Team.

Miami-Dade County School Board vice chair Monica Colucci, at the meeting of Nov. 19, proffered agenda item B-6, recognizing the G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School Boys Swim Team as the 2024 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 4A State Champions.

The Braddock High boys swim team captured the 2024 FHSAA Class 4A State Championship, earning the school’s first state title in the sport. The team dominated the meet with 306 points, finishing 79 points ahead of runner-up Windermere High School. This victory marked an impressive three-year rise, moving from 33rd place in 2022 to state runners-up in 2023 before securing the championship in 2024.

This historic win also marked the first state championship in any sport in Braddock’s 35-year history. The team is led by Coach Katia Garcia. She was named Miami-Dade County Public Schools Coach of the Year and is a three-time Miami Herald Coach of the Year.

Reflecting on the breakthrough, Coach Garcia said, “We came up short of the state crown on two prior occasions. We knew we had a team that could travel to Ocala and battle for the title. We won!”

Colucci praised the team’s accomplishment, stating, “This championship reflects the very best of our student athletes — their discipline, resilience, and heart. I am incredibly proud of the Braddock swim team for making school history. Their victory shows what can be achieved when dedication and teamwork come together. I commend these outstanding young men, their coaches, and the entire Braddock community for this remarkable accomplishment.”
