Miami-Dade School Board member Mary Blanco, at the board meeting of Aug. 12, proffered agenda item H-10, requesting that the Superintendent of Schools recognize September 2025 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in all Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

The item also authorizes the Superintendent of Schools, in collaboration with the Office of Community Engagement, to engage with local organizations or entities with a mission to spread awareness of childhood cancer, such as Live Like Bella Foundation, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, The Children’s Cancer Fund, Sofia’s Hope Inc., and Sebastian Strong Foundation, to raise awareness of childhood cancer and support and honor these children and their families.

September is nationally recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness, honoring affected families, and supporting research and care. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death among U.S. children, with about 15,000 diagnosed annually and one in five not surviving. Survivors often face long-term effects.
