Miami-Dade County School Board vice chair Monica Colucci, at the School Board meeting of Oct. 16, proffered agenda item B-10, recognizing Angelica Delgado.

Delgado is a three-time Olympian, a member of Team USA Judo, and a graduate of John A. Ferguson Senior High School and Florida International University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Delgado competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2020 games in Tokyo, Japan, and, most recently, the 2024 games in Paris, France.

Her journey began as a child, when her father, Miguel Delgado, a member of the Cuban National Judo Team before fleeing for the United States in the 1980s, taught her the basics of the sport in their backyard when she was 9 years old. By 15, she was competing internationally, and by 18, she won her first senior national championships, launching the start of her celebrated judo career.

Raised in Miami, Delgado is proud to represent the Cuban community.

“I am first-generation born in the U.S., and my entire family is Cuban. Representing my Cuban heritage means a lot to me,” she said.

Delgado’s “never give up” attitude is something that has been nurtured through her sport.

“Judo taught me to fall, pick myself up, and keep moving forward,” she said about the perpetual cycle of successes and setbacks.

“Ms. Delgado is a role model for young athletes, exhibiting the values of hard work, resilience, and sportsmanship,” vice chair Colucci said. “It is a privilege to recognize and celebrate her incredible achievements.”

Delgado competes in the under 52-kilogram weight classification. Some of her career achievements include:
• Currently ranked No, 21 in the world
• Five-time National Judo Champion,
• Silver medalist in April 2024, at her ninth Senior Pan American-Oceania Championship
• Ninth place finish at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris
• Ninth place finish at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo
• Seventeenth place finish at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio
• Three-time Grand Slam Medalist
• Five-time Grand Prix Medalist
• Nine-time Senior Pan Am Championships Medalist
• Three-time Pan Am Games Bronze Medalist
• Ninth place finish at the 2024 World Championship
• Competed in 12 World Championships representing Team USA
