Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX) have announced a new strategic collaboration aimed at improving the efficiency of student transportation.

This partnership authorizes M-DCPS school buses to utilize designated bus lanes on State Road 836, also known as the Dolphin Expressway, during periods of heavy traffic.

Under the terms of the agreement, school buses are permitted to transition into these specialized lanes whenever the flow of traffic in general-purpose lanes drops below 20 miles per hour. This initiative is designed to bypass the peak-hour congestion that frequently impacts one of Miami-Dade County’s busiest corridors, ensuring that students spend less time in traffic and more time in the classroom.

This collaboration builds on the Miami-Dade County School Board’s continued advocacy to identify and implement creative infrastructure solutions to meet the transportation needs of our families.

Access to these lanes will help expedite the movement of buses by reducing delays caused by peak-hour congestion along one of the county’s busiest corridors. The ability to utilize these lanes will contribute to more reliable travel times and help minimize delays in student arrival and dismissal times throughout Miami-Dade County.

“This partnership shows what can happen when agencies work together to serve our community,” said School Board member Roberto J. Alonso. “Allowing school buses to use these lanes during heavy congestion will help reduce delays, improve reliability for families, and ensure students spend more time in the classroom and less time in traffic.”

This partnership reflects the continued collaboration between M-DCPS and community agencies to improve services for students and families while maintaining adherence to established safety protocols. The district’s Department of Transportation will ensure that all drivers operating under these conditions are fully informed of the guidelines governing the use of the bus lanes.
