Sheriff’s Office taking proactive steps to combat summer crime
Deputies — both in uniform and plainclothes — have been deployed across the county, conducting high-visibility patrols and smart enforcement.

Summer in Miami-Dade County brings beach days, barbecues and a welcome influx of visitors. It’s also a time when law enforcement agencies nationwide typically see an uptick in violent crime, often linked to larger gatherings, alcohol consumption and other seasonal factors.

That’s why the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is taking proactive steps to address these patterns head-on. We’ve launched Operation Safe Summer, a strategic 12-week initiative targeting crime hot spots, removing illegal weapons from our streets and holding violent offenders accountable.

Our investigative units, specialized units and road patrol units are all playing a key role, helping to prevent violence before it happens. So far, we’ve seized more than 87 illegal firearms and made more than 536 felony arrests. Deputies — both in uniform and plainclothes — have been deployed across the county, conducting high-visibility patrols and smart enforcement to protect the places where we live, work and play. We’re also focusing on park patrols, community outreach events, bike patrols, traffic and parking enforcement, DUI details and other crime prevention initiatives.

Through the first half of 2025, we’ve seen promising results in our comprehensive efforts to stem violent crime and property crime. From Jan. 1 through June 19, crime across all major categories — known as Part I crimes — has dropped to a four-year low. Homicides are down 27 percent, violent crimes are down 23 percent, shootings are down 32 percent and property crimes have declined 20 percent. These trends are encouraging, and we remain focused on sustaining this momentum.

This success is driven in part by our commitment to community policing — getting deputies out of their vehicles and into neighborhoods to engage directly with residents, business owners and visitors. These connections build trust, strengthen transparency and foster the kind of collaboration that keeps communities safe.

Guided by years of data and experience, we are focusing our resources where they are needed most. While summer is still unfolding, we’re prepared — and committed — to making it a safe, enjoyable season for everyone in Miami-Dade County.
