Miami-Dade County Commissioner Juan C. Zapata expressed thanks to everyone who submitted ideas for enhancing the West End’s outdoors as part of the Miami Foundation’s “Public Space Challenge.”
Six of the top 56 finalists for the Challenge, which annually solicits ideas for improving public spaces around Miami-Dade County, came from the West End.
The ideas included a West End Concert Series, a “Let’s Grow” community garden, West End Geocaching, a “Beat Bus Miami” traveling concert, West End Bus Station Enhancements, and canopy trees and haiku displays at 10 Kendall Drive bus stops.
The Miami Foundation, along with the Health Foundation of South Florida and Baptist Health South Florida, provides funding to turn the best ideas into reality. Commissioner Zapata donated $30,000 to fund more ideas for the West End.
Commissioner Zapata said he is committed to enhancing public spaces in the community and increasing public engagement. Some of his recent initiatives to improve public spaces include free Wi-Fi access in District 11 greenspaces, including Westwind Lakes, Olympic, and Hammocks parks; painting walls along major corridors, and making landscape enhancements at major intersections.
“The West End had the second highest number of finalists in the entire county, second only to the downtown Miami area, and I’m very proud of all the great ideas for improving our public spaces,” Commissioner Zapata said. “The overwhelming response from our residents shows that the West End is a truly vibrant community, and I can’t wait to see some of these ideas come to fruition.”
