South Florida Clarinet Choir Celebrates 12th anniversary with memorable performance

The South Florida Clarinet Choir, “Les Art Nouveau Chalumeaux,” recently celebrated its 12th anniversary with a free concert at FIU’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.
“We presented a very diverse and entertaining program to nearly 400 music enthusiasts,” said Richard A. Zogaib, the ensemble’s director and clarinet instructor at FIU.
Zogaib also serves as associate conductor of the South Florida Youth Symphony and is a former member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.
Accompanied by the ensemble, Miami Arts Studio 6–12 @ Zelda Glazer High School freshman Andrés Anoceto performed Michele Mangani’s Blues, inspired by George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. FIU student Lucas Beltran and UM student Lukas Alessandri, both saxophonists, performed an arrangement of The Prayer, penned by David Foster.
Student conductor Harold Rivas Perdomo, a recent graduate of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, led the ensemble in an arrangement of Sergei Prokofiev’s Montagues and Capulets from Romeo and Juliet.
Additional works by Winstead, Piazzolla, Dvořák, Ward, Holst, Sousa, Meacham and Rezniček rounded out a varied and patriotic program.
The largest ensemble of its kind in Florida (hosted by FIU), the highly acclaimed all-volunteer interscholastic ensemble is comprised of exceptional middle school, high school, college and university students. Clarinet instructors, music educators, four percussionists and a double bassist complete the nearly 50-member ensemble.
“The talent level in this group is astounding,” Zogaib said. “We are privileged to share the art of the clarinet in this unique setting.”
