South Florida Youth Symphony closes its 58th season with concert on May 21
South Florida Youth Symphony practices for its season finale concert, May 21, at Florida International University.

The Emmy and Gold Medal Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYSmusic.org) will conclude its 58th season with two student solos and a tribute to former associate conductor George Walters on May 21 at the Herbert Wertheim Auditorium on Florida International University’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, 11200 SW Eighth St.

The concert, which features student soloists David Feijoo on oboe and Sophia Viera on piano as well as all the training divisions of the SFYS program — including beginning strings, intermediate band, string consort, wind ensemble and symphonia — begins at 4 p.m.

“As a music educator in the public school system and during his years with the Youth Symphony, George had a profound influence on entire generations of young musicians,” said SFYS executive and music director Marjorie Hahn, a long-time friend of Walters, who unexpectedly passed away recently.

Walters had served as associate conductor of the SFYS from 1988 to 1996.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone,” Hahn said.

According to Hahn, who just returned with the SFYS from a highly successful concert tour in Italy, the season finale concert will be one of the organization’s most inspiring, family-oriented concerts.

“Because we’ll feature all of the developing classes and orchestras, the concert provides the community with insight into the wide range of opportunities for students who want to join the Youth Symphony,” she said.

The SFYS program is sponsored with the support by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust (through public referendum, improving the lives of families and children making strategic investments in their future), Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, and Nancy Friday Foundation.

Tickets to the concert, which will be followed by a light reception, are $15 and are available via phone or at the door.
