South Florida Youth Symphony offers Summer Music Academy
The SFYS Summer Music Academy, which includes ages 3-19 years old, is accepting applications.

The Emmy Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS.net), one of the nation’s leading youth music organizations, still is taking applications for its 24th annual Summer Music Academy, at the Pawley Creative Arts Center on the Miami Dade College North Campus, 11380 NW 27 Ave.

The popular summer program, which includes children ages 3 to 19, began June 14 and continues through July 9, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Ranging from beginners through advanced, the camp will feature state-of-the-art sessions for classical strings, woodwinds, brass, piano, percussion, music theory and conducting taught by a world-class faculty. In addition to all instrumental courses, developmental sessions in jazz, rhythms and improvision will be offered.

“We’re very excited about this year’s Summer Music Academy after last year’s Academy was cancelled due to COVID,” said Marjorie Hahn, SFYS’ creative and executive director.

“With our staff of educational and music professionals, the Summer Academy is the perfect place for kids to begin— or expand — their musical talents.”

The SFYS has performed world-wide over the past five years. This includes winning a Gold Medal at the Heritage Music Festival in Washington, DC (2017), performing at Carnegie Hall (2018) and capturing Gold at the Prague Young Bohemian Music Festival (2019). Once the pandemic cancelled live rehearsals, the group began practicing and rehearsing on Zoom and eventually performed four online concerts, the third of which captured a local, prestigious Emmy.

Tuition for the four-week camp is $600 and $375 for siblings from families with more than one attendee. Tuition will be pro-rated for late signees and scholarships are available.

The SFYS program is sponsored through support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust (dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County), Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, The Batchelor Foundation and the Nancy Friday Foundation.
