Pope Francis wisely proclaimed that our life spreads light when it is given in service and that the secret of joy is living to serve. St. Brendan High School’s motto–Led by Christ, who changes our hearts and the world–is meant to inspire a deep sense of social awareness and responsibility for one’s neighbor to its students, faculty and staff. The school has a long and rich history of service to the community.
During Catholic Schools Week 2022, whose theme is Faith. Excellence. Service., the St. Brendan High School Theology Department coordinated a drive where students were asked to donate items to help support American Veterans. The items were collected throughout Catholic Schools Week and then donated to Camillus House who, through their direct work with veterans, will supply them with items as needed. When asked why this particular organization was chosen, Jeff Caballero, Theology teacher and coordinator of the Community Service Learning Program, commented that “we chose to give to the Veterans as one of the themes during this week is Celebrating the Nation. What better way to celebrate our nation than to give back to those who have fought to defend all we hold so dear as Americans?”
Starting on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 and running until February 16, 2002, each grade was asked to donate certain items through their Theology classes. The ninth graders were asked to make a toiletry kit, which included two travel size packs of wipes, two sticks of deodorant, two bars of soap and one washcloth. Tenth graders were asked to donate packs of men’s white tube socks, eleventh graders were asked to donate packs of size large and X-large of men’s briefs and the twelfth graders were asked to donate packs of size large and X-large white crew neck t-shirts/undershirts. All these items should make for a rather substantial and thoughtful contribution to Camillus House and in turn, help support our American Veterans.
