Education nonprofit Achieve Miami hosted its annual “Achieve Summer Showcase” event, where hundreds of elementary and high school students from Title I schools presented their culminating summer projects to a panel of experts and the Greater Miami community.
The Showcase, which took place on Friday, July 21, marked the culmination of a six-week program in which students adopted community projects and developed solutions to pressing challenges.
Elementary students revealed their community projects through interactive exhibits in their classrooms, while high school students made business presentations to a panel of judges a la Shark Tank.
The panel included:
David Duque, assistant principal at Miami Southridge Senior High;
Maite Padron, director of Recruitment at Miami-Dade College, and
Helena Rosa, educator at Robert Morgan Educational Center.
The winning project, “From Trash to Treasure,” embodied sustainability and innovation, as the students proposed repurposing discarded items collected during beach and community cleanup efforts to create meaningful artwork. Other projects included student-led college readiness and financial literacy training during the school day, community fridges to combat food deserts, and strategies for overall community economic empowerment.
“As part of Achieve Summer’s project-based learning, students are reimagining what the classroom can look like. They develop a deep context knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication by identifying and addressing real challenges in our community,” said Leslie Miller Saiontz, Achieve Miami founder.
Achieve Miami is a nonprofit organization that is narrowing racial divides and leveling the playing field in Miami-Dade schools by matching educational challenges with tangible solutions. The Achieve Summer program brings together 500 students across Miami-Dade for a free six-week summer program that provides project-based learning, leadership development and meaningful enrichment and service opportunities.
Achieve Summer currently is active at four schools across Miami-Dade County (Caribbean K-8 Center, Jesse J McCrary Elementary, Frederick Douglass Elementary, and Lake Stevens Elementary).
