Tami Cherdack Sherman, a professional vocalist, pianist and guitarist who has dedicated her life to the power of music to connect and inspire, was installed recently as the cantor of Congregation Dor Chadash in Kendall.
The ceremony, conducted at the Dave and Mary Alper JCC, was officiated by author and humanitarian Rabbi Stephen Fuchs, with Dor Chadash’s Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Tabachnikoff officiating as her co-clergy.
“Returning to my hometown of Miami/Kendall to serve Congregation Dor Chadash — a congregation deeply connected to my family history — is a truly fulfilling homecoming,” Cherdack Sherman said. “This opportunity represents the culmination of a diverse and rewarding career.”
A graduate of Miami Killian High School, Cherdack Sherman received her training at Hebrew College in Brookline, MA and served an internship at Temple Tifereth Israel in Malden, MA. For 24 years, she served as cantor/musical director at Congregation Kol Haverim in Glastonbury, CT. Honored by special recognition from the Connecticut State Assembly for her two decades of musical community engagement, Cherdack Sherman holds a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory and a Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Connecticut.
In addition to her duties at Kol Haverim, she twice performed as soloist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, sang at various summer festival Broadway concerts in New York, performed coloratura opera roles, and sang regularly in Klezmer performances nationwide.
Beyond her liturgical work, Cherdack Sherman has actively sought to broaden her impact.
She dedicates herself to supporting women facing challenges associated with the BRCA1 gene mutation through counseling and advocacy and served on the New England Conservatory’s Cultural Equity Council.
She comes to Dor Chadash with husband, Dr. Aaron Sherman, a Rabbi and magician, and five sons.
“Cantor Tami is an incredible addition to Dor Chadash, and all of South Florida,” said Tabachnikoff. “She simply leaves her audience spellbound and the congregation inspired.”
