I like the handling of the 2021 BMW M5.
BMW M’s blistering power is matched with responsive handling to deliver track-level performance on every turn. With unique features like 50/50 weight distribution, advanced M xDrive, and M-engineered suspensions and differentials, this car elevates BMW’s signature handling to a degree that is one of the best in this class.
It’s smooth and powerful, alright. For a full appreciation of its strength I would recommend “track mode,” which is part of the “competition” package. It turns off the automatic systems, so it’s only you, the road and your reflexes to keep you on course.
The 2022 BMW M5 Sedan has a 0-60 mile per hour time of just 3.2 seconds, while the first-ever BMW M5 CS Sedan can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.
It’s no surprise because the M5 has an engine that can produce as much as 627 horsepower. The M5 delivers 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. For that speed and performance expect to pay a little more than $100,000.
The 2022 BMW M5 Sedan comes standard with several safety features including frontal collision warning, active blind spot detection, and lane departure warning. Add the available “driving assistant professional” package for even more safety technology like extended traffic jam assistant, active driving assistant with side collision avoidance, cross-traffic alert front, and more.
The 4.4-liter BMW M class TwinPower Turbo V-8 with the competition package that I mentioned above includes an advanced cooling system and a unique oil pan design to maintain pressure through challenging corners.
The shifter is tied to the 8-speed M sport transmission and three-stage “drivelogic” shifting system. If you are like me and you like more of a hands-on experience, M paddle shifters are included. Now that is a detail gives this BMW lots of personality.
The standard quad exhaust has four distinct sound modes, ranging from the aggressive sport plus mode to stealthy silent mode. The optional “competition” package adds the M Sport exhaust system for a more intense sound.
The 2022 BMW M5 and the First-Ever BMW M5 CS sedans both come standard with M xDrive, BMW’s performance-oriented all-wheel drive technology, which features adjustable 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD modes for complete control on the road.
The great looks run throughout the car and extend all the way to the M Compound brakes, which come in red or black calipers. You can also upgrade to the carbon ceramic brakes for improved fading stability, higher heat resistance and unique gold calipers.
My takeaway is that the 2021 BMW M5 sedan has the character of a luxury car and the soul of a sports car. It’s a nice combination that makes this latest in the series very special.
