Summer and fall are peak travel seasons for many older adults – whether that means soaking up the sunshine, visiting loved ones, or finding a cooler place to unwind. With a little preparation, your trip can be just as smooth as it is enjoyable.

The key is thinking ahead in a few simple ways so you can focus less on logistics and more on the experience.

Start with a quick health check-in
Before you go, connect with your healthcare provider – especially if your trip involves long travel days, more physical activity or a time zone change. It’s a simple step that can help you plan ahead, adjust anything needed and avoid surprises while you’re away.

Pack smart – and keep essentials close
If you are flying, medications should always go in your carry-on bag, in their original containers, with a few extra days’ supply in case plans change. It also is helpful to keep a short list of medications, health conditions and emergency contacts with you regardless of your mode of travel. This can make a big difference if you need care while away from home.

Know your coverage and have a backup plan
Take a few minutes to understand what your health plan covers when you are out of town – and consider travel insurance for added peace of mind. Sharing your itinerary and key details with a trusted friend or family member is another easy way to help stay protected.

Keep moving and stay hydrated
Long flights, road trips, or train rides can mean more sitting than usual. Make it a point to stand, stretch, or walk when you can. And drink water regularly; travel can be more dehydrating than you think, especially on planes.

Build in time to rest
It can be tempting to jam-pack your schedule, but leaving room to recharge helps prevent fatigue and keeps your trip enjoyable from start to finish. A little flexibility can go a long way if your energy level shifts day to day.

Choose safety and comfort over convenience.
Where you stay and how you get around matters. Well-lit areas, walkable spaces and accommodations that meet your needs can help reduce stress and lower the risk of falls or injury.

Listen to your body and adjust as needed
New climates, different foods and changes in routine can all affect how you feel. Pay attention to your energy, sleep and hydration, and don’t hesitate to slow down or tweak your plans along the way.

Bottom line
Travel doesn’t have to be complicated to be rewarding. A little preparation can help you stay healthy, safe and confident – so you can fully enjoy the journey, wherever it takes you.
