Miami Roller Rink, formerly known as Hot Wheels and Super Wheels Skating Center, has announced its new ownership that is committed to preserving the rich history and legacy of this iconic Miami spot located at 12265 SW 112 St. in West Kendall.
Contrary to recent speculations, the rink is not closing or transforming into something different but is, in fact, here to stay, ensuring that the tradition of roller skating in the community continues for generations to come. Pam Mostacero and Gabe Colon, two parents from the rink’s current roller-skating team, officially will become the new owners and operators of the rink on Jan. 1, 2024.
Super Wheels holds a special place for Mostacero and Colon, who grew up roller skating.
Their family’s connection with this rink deepened when their daughters joined the Super Wheels Roller Skating Team representing Miami in the Southern Region of USA Roller Sports. Over the years, the establishment has become a second home for the family, who are regulars at the rink, frequenting the venue three or four times weekly for recreation and training.
In 2023, the couple was shocked to discover the Super Wheels property was for sale. The decision to lease the property was fueled by a sense of urgency after finding out about potential buyers looking to transform the venue into an unrelated business that was not a roller rink, ending the nearly 40-year history of this facility and closing the last remaining roller rink in Miami.
Saving the rink became very personal as the rink is a special place for the family and the community. The name change to Miami Roller Rink reflects the couple’s commitment to honoring the legacy that the rink represents, and a tribute to the Miami community that has kept it rolling since 1987. In their eyes, the rink belongs to the city.
“Whether you know it as Hot Wheels, Thunder Wheels or Super Wheels, this venue is the local roller rink of Miami. It is a place that has been home to so many first jobs, childhood birthday parties, skate competitions, and live music events, Mostacero said. “As a family who has been regulars at the rink for many years, we are thrilled that we are able to continue the legacy of the space and honor its history. We look forward to many more years of building memories for the community.”
Miami Roller Rink holds the title of the longest-standing roller rink in Miami, the last of its kind. The family is committed to respecting the venue’s history and to recruiting the next generation of roller skaters. Recognizing roller skating both as a sport and a recreational activity, they plan to continue offering classes with World Class coaches such as Gloria Manning, themed events for frequent skaters and preserving the long-standing Monday Adult Night that starts every week off for skaters in South Florida.
With support and guidance from the Roller Skating Association and other family entertainment center mentors including Super Wheels Skating Center owner, Thomas Mitchell, they plan to smoothly transition into their new role as owners and operators without any disruption to operations for the thousands of skaters who frequent the rink monthly. There currently are no major renovations or shutdowns planned and the family is not rushing into any decisions. They take great pride in the responsibility of upholding the history that comes with the venue.
As Miami Roller Rink embarks on this exciting new chapter under fresh ownership, the community can expect positive and thoughtful changes that celebrate the past while ushering in a vibrant future for roller skating enthusiasts of all ages.
Miami Roller Rink is located at 12265 SW 112 St., in the same historic location that housed the Hot Wheels and Super Wheels Skating Centers. Hours of operation for Jan. 1 and beyond will be posted on the website and weekly updates posted on the Instagram account.
