United Way Miami, one of the leading and longest standing non-profits in Miami-Dade, hosted its 2024 Annual Meeting and Volunteer Awards on Monday, June 17, at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami, gathering corporate partners, community leaders and supporters to celebrate a century of service and honor extraordinary volunteers.
United Way Miami president and CEO Symeria Hudson highlighted the organization’s progress during the past year, including the growth of UpSkill Miami and the impact of the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education (CFE). Reflecting on United Way Miami’s centennial, she shared insights on how the next century of service is taking shape.
“Our Annual Meeting and Volunteer Awards is a celebration of the collective impact of our volunteers, board members, staff and supporters. This year is especially significant as we commemorate 100 years of United Way Miami — a testament to a century of service and community dedication,” Hudson said.
“United Way Miami honored exceptional individuals who have championed the cause of improving education, financial stability and health for Miami’s residents. As we look towards the future, their remarkable contributions will continue to inspire and shape the next century of our mission. Congratulations to all our awardees for their unwavering commitment to making Miami a stronger community.”
The Volunteer Awards recognized and celebrated the volunteers who have made a transformative impact on United Way Miami and those the organization serves. Six outstanding individuals have forever changed Miami’s community for the better through their service and commitment to United Way’s mission:
Florida State Rep. Vicki L. Lopez received the Public Service Leadership Award for her dedication to improving services and policies for Miami-Dade children and families.
T. Willard Fair, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Miami, received the Monsignor Walsh Outstanding Human Services Professional Award for more than 60 years of leadership in advancing the development of a compassionate and effective social service system in our community.
Thelma Gibson, founding sponsor, board member, and namesake of Thelma Gibson Health Initiative Inc., received the Essie Silva Community Builder Award for her seven-decade commitment to community service and advocacy for the most marginalized, underserved and underrepresented individuals in our community.
Robert E. Sanchez, chair and CEO of Ryder System Inc., received the Dorothy Shula Award for Outstanding Volunteerism for his significant impact and commitment to bringing hope and opportunity into the lives of others through his unwavering support of United Way Miami over countless decades.
Milana Lamdan and Zahra Marie Ronizi, Miami-Dade County students, received the Outstanding Youth Award for their leadership, commitment and character in community service.
Additionally, the program also recognized Miami-Dade County Public Schools, one of United Way’s largest Workplace Employee Campaign partners, for surpassing the million dollar mark, raising $1,153,146 this year. Seven top-performing schools were acknowledged.
