Would you know how to react if a man with a gun suddenly stormed into your place of business?
The staff of University Credit Union has a pretty good idea after participating in a recent active shooter exercise. The FIU Police Department and Miami-Dade Police Department’s Priority Response Team provided the training at the West Kendall branch of the University Credit Union in December.
“Our West Kendall team, along with managers from our three branch offices took part in the active shooter training,” said Michael J. Welch Sr., University Credit Union president/CEO. “Our first training experience was in 2017 and we’ve held bi-annual active shooter classroom training and updates each year ever since.”
According to Welch, the “live” active shooter experience is important in allowing his team to be better prepared through hands-on training in the actual workplace. In response to the prevalence of active shooter incidents at places of worship, schools, malls and stores, police departments across the country are providing realistic onsite training through safe, role-playing scenarios.
“Practicing the active shooter response of ‘Run, Hide, Fight’ quickly brings home the seriousness and intensity that accompanies a real situation,” Welch said. “This training increases employee awareness and readiness and is also valuable to them not just in the workplace, but anywhere in their daily lives. In addition, we stress that team members share this experience and knowledge with their family and friends to extend the lifesaving value of the exercise.”
