Miami-Dade School Board vice chair Monica Colucci, State Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, and State Rep. Mike Redondo presented Village Green Elementary School with a ceremonial check for $500,000 on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The funds were allocated by the 2025 Florida Legislature to support Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Classical Education Model.
The funding represents a major investment in innovation and student success, advancing the district’s goal of expanding educational choice by transforming Village Green Elementary into the first traditional public school in the nation to fully adopt a Classical Education Model. The classical approach emphasizes the grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric stages of learning, focusing on wisdom, virtue, and civic understanding.
To ensure a successful transition, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has partnered with the Hamilton Classical and Civic Education Center at the University of Florida. The center will provide professional development, instructional materials, and ongoing support. Vice chair Colucci also recognized Ben Boyce, director of Civics Outreach and Strategic Partnerships at the University of Florida, for his leadership and collaboration in this initiative.
“This investment reflects our state’s continued commitment to strengthening academic excellence while cultivating thoughtful and responsible learners,” Colucci said. “Village Green Elementary is setting a new standard for innovation and excellence in education, preparing students to become logical thinkers and problem solvers in an ever-changing world.”
The event, held at Village Green Elementary’s PE courtyard, featured remarks by Colucci; Rafael Villalobos, South Region superintendent; Dr. Marlene Leyte-Vidal, principal of Village Green Elementary, as well as Sen. Rodriguez and Rep. Redondo.
