FIU recently hosted a special orientation for visiting students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands looking to continue their education in wake of the devastation left by hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Approximately 200 visiting students toured the campus, met academic advisors, registered for classes and learned about grant opportunities. The orientation is a part of FIU’s ongoing efforts to support students affected by the devastating hurricane season.
Visiting students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are eligible to receive in-state tuition through the spring semester. Almost 1,000 students from Puerto Rico and other affected islands have applied to be visiting students at FIU under the FIU Strong initiative. Some were able to start online classes in October, during an eight-week mini session.
