Volunteers participate in JCS Matzah Mitzvah event
Community members come together to assemble Passover food and personal care baskets for more than 400 Holocaust Survivors and vulnerable seniors across Miami-Dade County.

Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS) on Sunday, Mar. 8, hosted its annual JCS Matzah Mitzvah volunteer event at Bet Shira Congregation (Pinecrest) and at Scheck Hillel Community School (North Miami), where community members came together to assemble Passover food and personal care baskets for more than 400 Holocaust Survivors and vulnerable seniors across Miami-Dade County.

At a time when antisemitism and violence are affecting communities around the world, the event highlighted a powerful local story of compassion and resilience, as volunteers worked to ensure that some of the community’s most vulnerable residents can celebrate Passover with dignity.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniela Levine Cava made a special appearance at the Bet Shira location, joining volunteers in packaging Passover food items.

Among those receiving support is Miriam Brejt, a 90-year-old Holocaust Survivor who was born in Bucharest, Romania and survived the Holocaust as a child after spending months in a Ukrainian ghetto before living in Losova until the end of the war. Today, the widow, mother of four, and grandmother of seven continues to live independently despite chronic health challenges.

Through the JCS Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program, Miriam receives live-in homecare, food assistance, housekeeping, and transportation so she can safely remain in her home with the support of her family.
