Walk for Mental Health Awareness scheduled for May 18 at Zoo Miami
Thousands participated in the 2023 walk.

NAMIWalks Miami-Dade, part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is sponsoring its yearly walk for Mental Health Awareness on May 18 during Mental Health Awareness Month. Each year, thousands of attendees from all over the county and the Keys join in the effort to fuel mental health awareness and let people know they are not alone.

The walk takes place on Saturday, May 18, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Zoo Miami, 12400 SW 152 St.

Kate Edelson, director of Fundraising and Special Events, stresses the importance of this event.

“The Walk for Mental Health Awareness is our time to celebrate how far we’ve come and all that we’ve accomplished for mental health,” Edelson said. “Join the 3,000 participants who will be taking strides together towards a future defined by empathy and understanding for those impacted by mental health conditions and their families.”

There are different levels of engagement. People can sign up to participate as a team captain and form their own team. These teams can be from corporate organizations, or just family and friends. You can also create a team in memory or honor of someone else. The next way to participate is to join someone else’s team, or to participate as an individual.

There also is a virtual option that doesn’t involve going to the zoo but taking pictures of your own walk and posting them to social media. Details on all these are on the registration page.
