Thousands of Miami-Dade County residents continue to struggle to pay their water and sewer bill.
Access to safe, reliable drinking water has taken on new significance throughout the pandemic, as a vital part of cleaning, disinfecting, and helping to contain the spread of communicable diseases including COVID.
At the same time, this past year has brought unprecedented economic hardship for too many families. While the disconnection of water service and late fees due to non-payment continues to be suspended, many families are struggling to pay their water bills. One out of 10 Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) customers are behind on their utility bills.
Miami-Dade County has launched a new community-wide effort to help those in need pay their water bills — WASD Cares.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava first sponsored the creation of this financial assistance program as Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 8.
“Your contribution to WASD Cares can make a big difference to those in our community who are struggling right now and help them find peace of mind,” Mayor Levine Cava said.
“We ask that residents who can afford it give the gift of water to a neighbor in need.”
WASD Director Roy Coley is optimistic about the impact of the program aimed at supporting those in need.
“Our initial goal is to collect $1 million through WASD Cares to support those families who need it most,” he said. “If each of our 2.3 million customers donated just 50 cents, we would reach that goal.”
WASD Cares is currently in the donation phase. As funds become available, the Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) will manage the program and open applications for the disbursement of funds. An announcement will be made at that time to inform the public about eligibility and how to apply.
“Over the last year, households financially impacted by COVID have been forced to make difficult decisions,” said Annika Holder, CAHSD interim director. “WASD Cares further strengthens the county’s response to meeting the basic needs of our residents.”
