Ways to stay on track of your wellness goals

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Almost every year, one of the top New Year’s resolutions for many is to exercise more and eat healthier. But how do you turn a resolution into a habit that lasts all year? The key is finding balance in our diets and fitness routines.

In Florida, about 30 percent of adults live with obesity. These numbers highlight the importance of making small, sustainable changes that may lead to better overall health.

Here are some tips to consider:
Practice mindful eating
Instead of skipping your favorite dishes, focus on portion control. It is essential to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Add lean protein and choose whole grains when possible for a balanced and satisfying meal.

Stay active, even in small ways
Busy schedules can make workouts challenging, but small movements add up. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Some ways to add more movement throughout your day include taking a walk after meals, trying a workout class or an online workout, parking farther from your destination, or taking the stairs. Physical activity may help offset extra calories, boost your mood, and have long-term health benefits.

Plan ahead
If you know a big meal is coming, balance it with lighter choices the rest of the day. Consider healthy swaps, such as roasted vegetables instead of creamy casseroles, or fruit-based desserts instead of heavy sweets. Keep healthy snacks on hand or bring a nutritious dish to share at gatherings. These options help you stay on track.

Seek support when you need it
Also, remember that your health plan may offer programs or resources to help support you in your goals. Programs that focus on a whole person approach may be more effective at treating all aspects of a person’s health and may lead to better long-term success and health outcomes.

By making mindful choices, staying active, and tapping into resources designed to help support you, you can make it easier to accomplish your well-being goals. Taking small steps today may lead to lasting benefits throughout the new year.
