Wells Fargo has been named as The Education Fund’s 2025 “Donor Next Door” for its transformative support of financial education in Miami-Dade County’s public schools. The Donor Next Door celebration, hosted by PhilanthropyMiami, honors organizations making significant community contributions. The award was presented at a celebration on February 19, 2025, at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus.
Leo Toca, Senior Social Impact & Sustainability Specialist at Wells Fargo, accepted the award on the company’s behalf. He remarked, “When students understand money management early, they’re better equipped to build strong financial futures. That’s why Wells Fargo remains committed to supporting innovative educational programs in Miami-Dade.”
Wells Fargo was nominated for the award by The Education Fund, a non-profit that works together with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to innovate and invest in our community’s students. Through their significant financial and volunteer contributions to The Education Fund, Wells Fargo has empowered students with critical financial skills. Their support of programs like The Education Fund Teach-A-Thon equips students with essential money management capabilities.
During The Education Fund Teach-A-Thon, business and community leaders volunteer to step into a teacher’s shoes for an hour in a Miami-Dade County public school classroom on topics ranging from financial literacy to STEM to writing. Unlike a traditional career day, the professionals teach the students a full lesson, bringing expertise from their field and examples of real-world applications of their lesson. The Public School Champions, as the volunteers are called, can also fundraise and advocate for teachers. A portion of the proceeds always goes back to the class that hosted the business professional.
“Wells Fargo’s dedication has been truly transformative for our students,” said Linda Lecht, President of The Education Fund. “Their support enables innovative programs that prepare young minds for financial success. Last school year, almost 2000 students received additional STEM/financial literacy lessons from a business professional, thanks to the Teach-A-Thon.”

Hector J. Ponte, South Florida Region Executive at Wells Fargo, The Education Fund’s past board chair and Miami Chamber of Commerce chair, highlighted the broader impact: “Investing in education means investing in our community’s future. These are the young men and women who will soon be working alongside us. Wells Fargo is helping ensure our students are both academically prepared and financially savvy.” Ponte, who regularly volunteers in the Teach-A-Thon adds. “As the father of two public school teachers, and the husband of another, supporting public schools is very important to me.”
