Zoo Lights, Zoo Miami’s winter holiday celebration, has returned this year with one million bright, animal shaped lights; dazzling tree lights; a 26-foot-tall holiday LED tree, and Canine Champions for Conservation, a new high energy show featuring rescue dogs. Zoo Lights will be celebrated from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on select nights from through Dec. 30.
Zoo Lights guests can enjoy special appearances with Santa Claus and the Grinch, a 26-foot-tall LED holiday tree, and a talking tree. Visitors will be delighted by ambassador animal appearances, Snowman’s River boat rides (additional charge), hot chocolate and cookies (additional charge), letters to Santa, and holiday shopping at the Zoo gift shop.
There also will be complimentary entertainment, including themed evenings, music, arts and crafts, and more.
In addition, this year Zoo Miami is supporting Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium on coral reef research and restoration. Each Friday night of Zoo Lights, guests who make a small donation can help create real Christmas coral trees.
Using a Mote pioneered technique called microfragmentation and reskinning, guests will learn how to cut coral using a safe specialized saw to create small coral fragments. Guests will mount those fragments on ceramic pedestals that will then grow in a Mote land-based nursery or will be hung on in-water coral trees until they are the proper size to outplant in the ocean. During this experience, guests will learn about the stressed condition of our coral reefs that are so vital to our ecology and economy and Mote’s efforts underway to restore Florida’s Coral Reef.
Guests who participate in the experience will be able to follow the journey of their coral fragment until it is out planted as part of the coral ecosystem restoration process. And on every Zoo Lights night, guests will be able to color their own “coral” ornaments to hang on “coral trees” in the plaza and make a pledge to protect our oceans.
Regular Zoo Lights Miami admission is $20.95 per adult and $18.95 per child. Zoo members save $2 per ticket. Guests should acquire their tickets and packages online at shop.zoomiami.org early as nights have limited capacity. The zoo will close at 4 p.m. for Zoo Lights nights.

Open daily, Zoo Miami is located at 12400 SW 152 St. General zoo admission is $22.95/adult, plus tax and $18.95/child (3-12) plus tax. Children under 2, zoo members, and parking are free.
