Zoo Miami Cheetah Healing Well!

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On July 27th of this year, “Winston,” Zoo Miami’s ambassador cheetah, sustained a trauma to his rear left leg that resulted in a compound fracture.  The injury required surgery to install two metal plates to align and stabilize the fracture.  The leg was then immobilized with a cast with Winston receiving weekly follow-up exams to ensure that proper healing was taking place.  That cast was removed for the final time this past week with very positive results!  Though Winston is still favoring that leg a bit as he rebuilds the muscles that have been isolated for several weeks in a cast, the Animal Health team is cautiously optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

This injury would have almost certainly resulted in the death of the animal had it happened in the wild and left untreated.  To be able to perform this specialized surgery on the severely injured leg of the fastest species of land animal on earth, and have it successfully recover, is a true testimony to the dedication and expertise of the Animal Health and Animal Science teams!  As part the care of the injury site, Winston is also receiving ongoing laser treatments to help further stimulate healing.

Winston will be closely monitored as he continues to progress on his recovery journey with strong hopes that he will be at full strength again soon!
