Mount Sinai Medical Center is proud to announce the establishment of their inaugural integrated research institute: The Semyon and Janna Friedman Advanced Research Institute (ARI), made possible through a transformative $15 million gift from longtime philanthropists Dr. Semyon and Janna Friedman. The signage for the newly named institute was installed last week, marking a significant milestone in Mount Sinai’s commitment to groundbreaking medical research and continued clinical innovation.
After relocating to Miami, the Friedmans were inspired to give back to the community that welcomed them with open arms. Their landmark donation is funding Mount Sinai’s first centralized research and innovation platform, a dynamic new space that will serve as a cornerstone for clinical and translational research. ARI’s robust infrastructure allows for evaluation of existing practices, improvement upon the current delivery of care, and utilization of new tools to prevent, diagnose, and treat — with greater specificity and less burden — disease in the future.
“We fell in love with Miami Beach and wanted to share our passion for research and healthcare with others in the community through our gift to Mount Sinai,” said Dr. Semyon and Janna Friedman.
The Semyon and Janna Friedman Advanced Research Institute will enable clinicians and scientists to turn patient experiences into vital data, research, and innovation. Additionally, it provides a framework to support investigator-initiated research that answers questions and identifies potential solutions to improve the quality of care by pursuing new ideas, diagnostics, and therapies; ARI will also support researchers through hypothesis generation and preliminary data.
A central element of ARI includes a sophisticated Data-Core system to manage research and health data, with future expansion planned for a comprehensive data warehouse and bio-linked biobank. This augmentation will allow investigators to conceptualize from idea to execution while ensuring regulatory oversight and compliance. Through ARI, investigators will have greater success in competing for federal, state, and foundation grant funding.
Each person helped, each life saved, and each family positively impacted is a testament to our highly skilled and award-winning team,” said Gino Santorio, President and CEO of Mount Sinai Medical Center. “The Friedmans’ generosity is accelerating our vision of making Mount Sinai a national leader in medical research and care.”
