After more than 100 years of service, Temple Israel of Greater Miami will sunset the synagogue at its current physical location at 137 NE 19th Street in the summer of 2025. Changing demographics, financial, and facility considerations necessitate a significant change in operations and the temple’s future.
Founded in 1922, Temple Israel has been a cornerstone of the Jewish community in Greater Miami, providing a place of worship, education, social justice, programming, and community for generations. Throughout its history, the temple has been a beacon of Jewish culture, social justice, and tradition, touching countless lives. Temple Israel was the backbone that helped build Reform Judaism’s tapestry in Miami-Dade County.
The newly appointed Transition Task Force will oversee the sunsetting process, ensuring that it is managed efficiently and with sensitivity to the needs and concerns of the congregational membership. However, this distinguished institution is poised to continue its legacy while ensuring its current members have a place to call their spiritual home.
Temple Israel of Greater Miami is more than its physical location, its spirit and legacy lie within its congregants and its history. The congregation has an opportunity to leverage its future into something worthy of that spirit that continues to positively impact our Jewish community. The story of Temple Israel of Greater Miami is not one of an ending but of a new beginning—one that carries forward its century-old mission and legacy into the future, fostering a vibrant and resilient Jewish community in South Florida.
