It’s Art Season: Art Basel 2014 Sneak Peak

art basel 2014[dropcap]E[/dropcap]very winter, leading art aficionados and fashionistas flock in groves to the capital of the sun and fun better known as Miami Beach. With its world-class art museums and private collections, plus its vibrant gallery scene, Miami Beach provides its visitors a wealth of opportunities to view some of the finest examples of Modern and contemporary art. Many of Miami’s internationally renowned institutions offer special exhibits to coincide with Art Basel 2014 that takes place December 4 – 7.

Leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa show historical work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well as newly created pieces by emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, films, and editioned works of the highest quality are on display at the main exhibition hall, while ambitious artworks and performances become part of the landscape at nearby beaches, Collins Park and SoundScape Park. 75,000 international visitors attended the 2013 edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach, with artists, collectors, gallerists, curators and art enthusiasts creating the excitement that makes this singular event a remarkable way to encounter art and bringing hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue to the city.

National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts), the non-profit organization that contributes to the cultural vitality of the nation by supporting the artistic development of talented young artists, will present a dynamic lineup of public events during Art Basel Miami Beach, including: live concerts by musical talents FKA twigs, James Blake and SBTRKT, with special performances by YoungArts alumni Grace Weber, Elliott Skinner and Kate Davis; a poignant exhibition in partnership with MoMA PS1 about artistic independence and the freedom of expression; and the opportunity to participate in Marina Abramovic Institute’s Slow Motion Walk.As part of YoungArts’ growing public programming initiative, each event will include the participation of YoungArts alumni — emerging artists who were previously honored by the Foundation for their excellence–and will highlight a different location of YoungArts’ iconic campus located in downtown Miami. UNTITLED. is a curated art fair for international galleries and nonprofit art spaces with a focus on emerging and mid career contemporary art. The third edition of UNTITLED. will be held in Miami Beach from December 3-7, 2014. Founded by Jeff Lawson in partnership with Alan G. Randolph in Miami, UNTITLED. has expanded its curatorial team for 2014. Led by artistic director Omar Lopez-Chahoud. Christophe Boutin and Melanie Scarciglia, co-founders of the distinguished publishing houses onestar press and Three Star Books in Paris, will introduce a new perspective to the international focus and content development of the fair. Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) marks its one year anniversary in the new, and now iconic waterfront building with an immersive evening of music and visuals featuring the first U.S. performance by Future Brown with live vocalists. Taking place Thursday, December 4 at 8 pm, this will be one of the most anticipated events on the Art Basel Miami Beach VIP calendar with Future Brown, the internationally acclaimed DJ collective comprised of artist and composer Fatima Al Qadiri; Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda of Nguzunguzu; and J-Cush of Lit City Trax. Accompanied with vocals for the first time in the U.S., Future Brown will be joined by guests from their forthcoming album on Warp Records slated for release this winter. The night will open with solo performances by Kelela and Fade To Mind artist Total Freedom with guest appearances by Ian Isiah and Maluca, all of who have garnered a strong following of music industry contemporaries and critics. Future Brown and vocalists will perform on a custom stage with a vibrant light and video production by THV Entertainment to the backdrop of a dynamic water sports event involving a flyboarding performance in Biscayne Bay choreographed by DIS Magazine. The museum’s façade will be used to project the premiere of the PAMM-commissioned music video from Future Brown’s debut album. MIAMI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
For the eleventh consecutive year, Miami Children’s Museum is proud to present ArtKids at Art Basel Miami Beach. From mixed media to building blocks and beyond, a variety of art exploration stations will be available for budding young artists to create their own original works of art. ArtKids at Art Basel Miami Beach runs Thursday through Saturday, December 5 – 7 from 12noon to 8PM and Sunday, December 8th from 12 noon to 6PM. WORLD EROTIC ART MUSEUM
Designer of album covers for Guns ‘N’ Roses and The Ramones artist Mark Kosatbi will be showcasing his works on December 1 at the World Erotic Art Museum. Hosting a reception, WEAM will open its doors to a multi-gifted artist who challenged the world. Coming into his own from drawing and painting studies at California State University to becoming a major mover in the West Village art scene of the late ‘80s, Kostabi’s provocative paintings were further enhanced when he founded Kostabi World, his Manhattan art studio, and not too long after, his move to Rome as a major presence in the Italian art scene. JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA – FIU
On Sunday, December 7, 2014 Join the Jewish Museum of Florida for their Basel, Lox and Cream Cheese Annual Brunch from 10 am – 12 pm. There will be a lecture with Stuart Geller titled Which Comes First… The Art or The Design? For nearly 30 years Stuart has guided people in their personal quest for the perfect home — listening to what they say, getting to know what moves them and what their needs are, and translating that into a stylish, functional, fabulous living space. In conjunction with their current exhibit, The Chosen: Selected Works From Florida Jewish Art Collectors, Stuart will talk about how he designs spaces for people with extensive art collections or for those just starting to collect art. BASS MUSEUM
Starting on December 3 through May 3, the Bass Museum will host One Way: Peter Marino, which explores the renowned American architect’s multifaceted relationship with art. Curated by Jerome Sans, it features artworks from Marino’s extensive contemporary art collection, presented within bespoke spaces designed by Marino; commissioned installations by five acclaimed artists; a new series of Marino’s bronze boxes; and the recreation of an opera set on which Marino collaborated.
