American artist John Dowd is showing his new series titled “About Florida” at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. March 7th to March 29th.
Gail Williams, owner of Williams McCall Gallery states, “Well known for his post-Hopper architectural portraits of Cape Cod homes, we feel fortunate that John Dowd is capturing Florida in his uniquely special way. Having brought us the In Florida and Florida Nocturne series since the gallery’s debut, this new series of 15 oil-on-canvas paintings is Dowd’s third show of Florida landscapes.
John Dowd shares, “It is a further exploration of my interest in the dazzling beauty of its skies and lighting alongside the often quirky local architectural vernacular … the sense of sublime in Out in Stiltsville … the anonymous but familiar in a nondescript corner of a typical neighborhood depicted just after a storm at twilight in Florida Landscape (after the rain) … the odd silhouettes of palms set against the night sky in Suburban Night … the rich saturated blue of evening at a South Beach motel with the glow from within a room in Blue Night … in these and the others in this show are things that I found arresting.”
Michael Cunningham, Pulitzer Prizewinning author of The Hours and By Nightfall and John Dowd collector, writes “John captures the subvert life of the seemingly inanimate. He gives us, in his paintings, the life we’ve been granted, and gives us as well the world that will continue after we’re gone.”
Dowd received a degree in architecture at Notre Dame and further advanced his studies in Rome. His work has been exhibited throughout the country with numerous works held in private, corporate and museum collections. He was awarded the Altman Prize “Grand Prize for Landscape“ from the National Academy of Design. Dowd currently resides in Provincetown and New York City.
