The City of Miami Beach received a $20,000 grant by Lowe’s Keep South Miami Dade Beautiful to enhance and beautify the city’s Pine Tree Park Community Garden through an ADAaccessibility project. The city recruited 10 volunteers to work on the garden project.
Through this partnership and funding support, the community garden received 85 new 8’ x 8’ plastic planter beds, 10 of which are raised beds for wheelchair bound gardeners. In addition, a paver walkway was installed providing better access to the garden entrance and the layout was reconfigured to provide a better gardening flow.
The city extended these efforts by installing warning tract material at all the aisles between the planters to improve accessibility throughout the garden.
“Receipt of this grant is so greatly appreciated. This garden represents so much to the community, in fact, one gardener, Mr. José Durán, who turned 90 years old this month says that this garden allows him to enjoy nature, friendships and remain enthusiastic about life. He speaks of the garden as if it were his Fountain of Youth,” said City of Miami Beach Parks & Recreation Deputy Director Elizabeth Valera.
