Passengers throughout Miami International Airport received flowers on March 8 as the airport celebrated International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. Representatives from American Airlines, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Transportation Security Administration joined Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González and the Association of Floral Importers of Florida (AFIF) to hand out more than 25,000 bouquets to honor and recognize women. With more than 50,000 daily passenger arrivals at MIA, nearly every woman entering Miami-Dade County via MIA had the opportunity to receive flowers.
“Since nine out of every 10 flowers entering the U.S. comes through MIA, we enjoy a huge flower industry in Miami-Dade County,” said Director González. “We are extremely proud to partner with the AFIF in this effort for the second year in a row, to honor and recognize our female passengers.”
Staff and volunteers greeted passengers at MIA with flowers – roses, gerbera daisies, carnations and spray chrysanthemums – and a postcard with information about the global day of recognition. The postcards highlighted MIA’s special relationship with flowers, as the gateway for 91% of all flower imports to the U.S.
Passengers were also encouraged to take pictures at MIA inside a commemorative photo frame as a social media memento, using the hashtag #MIAflowers to honor the special women in their lives.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It has been observed since in the early 1900’s.
Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981. In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed legislation which designated the month of March as Women’s History Month.
