Mount Sinai Medical Center Receives Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCI

Mount Sinai Medical Center Receives Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCIMount Sinai Medical Center of Florida has received full accreditation with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide. Mount Sinai is one of four hospitals in South Florida to receive the Cycle IV with PCI accreditation, the highest level of accreditation possible for treatment of chest pain.

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 people dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack.

The Harvey R. Chaplin Family Stroke and Chest Pain Center at Mount Sinai aims to reduce the mortality rate of heart attack patients by reducing the time that individuals exhibiting early symptoms of a heart attack are seen, diagnosed and treated. Treating patients more quickly during the critical early stages of a heart attack when treatments are most effective helps to preserve integrity of the heart muscle. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Mount Sinai has the best heart attack survival rate in Florida.*

To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Mount Sinai engaged in rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.

To the community served by Mount Sinai, this means that processes are in place that meet strict criteria aimed at:
• Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
• Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
• Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
• Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
• Ensuring the competence and training of Accredited Chest Pain Center personnel
• Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
• Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
• Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

By becoming an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center has enhanced the quality of care for the cardiac patient and has demonstrated its commitment to higher standards.
