Today, the Orange Bowl Committee and Miami-Dade County broke ground on a $2.3 million renovation of Walt Frazier Park in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The new football field will be called Orange Bowl Field at Walt Frazier Park. Renovations will include a field maintenance, an electronic scoreboard, new press box and shaded seating and building refurbishments. The much-needed renovation of Walt Frazier Park furthers the Orange Bowl’s commitment to youth sports in the South Florida community.
This is the Orange Bowl’s seventh Legacy Gift to the South Florida community and the fourth in Miami-Dade County. The additional three Miami-Dade parks that received overhauls include Miami’s Moore Park, Miami’s Ives Estates Park, and Homestead’s Harris Field Park. Combined, and with the generous support of partners, Orange Bowl Legacy Gift projects have provided over $27 million worth of improvements toward the beautification of the South Florida community and recreational park activities for residents and their families.
“Walt Frazier is a legendary figure in South Florida football, and we are honored to name this field after him,” said Eric Poms, chief executive officer, Orange Bowl Committee. “This renovation is a testament to his impact on our community and the countless young athletes he inspired.”
The Orange Bowl first unveiled the Legacy Program initiative in 2008, renovating Miami’s Moore Park in honor of the organization’s 75th anniversary. That year, the Orange Bowl also hosted the 2009 BCS National Championship. The legacy continues as the Orange Bowl Committee and its leadership of the 2026 Miami Host Committee prepares to host the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship on January 19, 2026 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Legacy Programs are one of the four pillars of Orange Bowl Cares, its overarching community outreach program which also includes Community Engagement, Education and Youth Sports. For 90 years, the Orange Bowl has been one of South Florida’s leading civic organizations, promoting championship sporting events, related premier entertainment and other year-round activities to inspire youth, engage our community and enhance the South Florida economy.
