Miami Association of Realtors donated $10,000 to create a welcoming environment for pollinators
City of Miami Beach held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 at 10 a.m. to mark the installation of a new pollinator garden at Poinciana Park located at 6301 Alton Rd.
“These special gardens are designed to create food sources for butterflies, bees and other pollinators that have been losing their natural habitats,” explained John Rebar, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “They play an important role in nature that is often taken for granted.”
The Poinciana Park pollinator garden and another one at Parkview Park Annex were made possible by a $10,000 donation from the Miami Association of Realtors through the National Association of Realtors’ Placemaking Grant.
Some 160 butterfly species alone breed in Florida and about 200 species migrate through the state, according to Florida wildlife experts.
Improvements at Poinciana Park and Parkview Park Annex (75 Dickens Ave.) include new seating, trash receptacles and pollinator-friendly plants, including the Florida coontie, milkweed, pentas and firebush.
