Sealife, Pirates, and Buried Treasure Come to Life in New Animation Film

Seaper Powers: The Movie Moves to the Big Screen

Miami Beach-based children’s author Kim Cameron has brought her book Seaper Powers: In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure to the big screen with a family-fun premiere taking place at South Point Park, Miami Beach on December 13th at 5:30pm, free to the public.   This colorful, 75-minute animated film takes viewers of all ages on a riveting under-the-sea adventure, featuring the talents several local musicians and voiceover artists. The film will be available on VOD (Video OnDemand) in January 2020.

Seaper Powers: The Movie opens in snowy Vermont, where little girl Emma longs for sunshine and adventure. When a family vacation takes her to the warm seas of the Caribbean, she encounters magical sea grass that gives her the power to talk to marine life. After meeting a shy octopus and an out-of-place starfish, Emma and her new friends embark on a journey in search of a legendary treasure, along the way learning valuable lessons about friendship, self-confidence, and the importance of keeping our oceans clean.

“I wanted to bring the books alive,” explains Kim Cameron, the film’s director, producer, and narrator. “Finding the right voices was key to the storyline. I also wanted to produce a film that is fun, while providing some key educational themes.”

The award-winning Seaper Powers book series includes five-chapter books for readers ages 4-9.  While the first book, In Search of Bleu Jay’s Treasure, is the basis for this movie, Cameron has introduces some charming new characters, and plot twists that may surprise even the most faithful Seaper Powers readers.

The premiere event will be accompanied by larger-than-life Oliver and Emma mascots, available for hugs and taking pictures. Plus, selections from the original score will be performed live by local students from music education nonprofit Guitars Over Guns’ afterschool program.  “The idea was to create a family event where kids have a complete experience, not just watching a movie,” Cameron explains.

Cameron’s film project began two years ago with hand-drawn storyboards and writing the script. Following auditions, voiceover actors began recording over one year ago. Talented animators were selected to bring the beloved Seaper Powers characters to life. John DePatie was the lead Music Producer for the film, with Kris Pierce as lead Sound Effects and Mastering Producer. Many local musicians contributed to the film’s music production, including Chad Bernstein of Suénalo, Elimir Garcia, Federico Colloca, and Billboard-charted singer-songwriter Cameron herself.

No stranger to film production, Cameron has produced several of her own music videos. “Working with video is completely different than an animation project,” says Cameron. “I had no idea the level of planning and detail required when I began. It was definitely a learning experience every step of the way.”
