Semilla French & American Bistro by Chef Frederic Joulin

The restaurant was founded in 2013 by Parisian native Frederic Joulin, whose culinary background includes cooking for former French President Jacques Chirac and training at the three-Michelin-starred Guy Savoy in Paris. Joulin chose the name Semilla—Spanish for “seed”—to reflect his philosophy of simple, ingredient-driven cooking that evolves with the seasons while maintaining consistency and freshness.

Over the years, Semilla has grown alongside Miami’s expanding culinary landscape, adapting its offerings to reflect the city’s diverse and international influences. Operated by Frederic and his wife Letitia Joulin, the restaurant has cultivated a loyal clientele while welcoming diners from around the world.

The menu features French bistro staples prepared in the restaurant’s open kitchen, including escargot persillade served in bone marrow, homemade foie gras terrine with fig jam, French onion soup topped with Gruyère, steak au poivre with French fries, and mussels marinière in white wine sauce. Desserts such as chocolate mousse and classic profiteroles remain favorites among regulars.

American-inspired dishes round out the offerings, including a French wagyu cheeseburger, half-roasted organic chicken “à la diable,” crab and asparagus risotto, and Mediterranean-style grilled octopus with chorizo ragout and smoked paprika.

Semilla is also known for its lively happy hour and beverage program, featuring a curated selection of wines, cocktails, and champagne. Wednesdays draw crowds for the restaurant’s popular $1 oyster special.

With its intimate 70-seat dining room, European-inspired décor, and open kitchen wrapped by a central bar, Semilla continues to embody the neighborhood bistro spirit. After more than a decade in Miami Beach, the Joulin family remains committed to the community that has supported the restaurant since its opening.

Semilla French Bistro & Wine Bar is located at 1330 Alton Road, Miami Beach. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight.
