Odyssey of The Mind Team 2018

The North Beach Elementary School (NBE) community is so proud of the six creative students, 5th grader Alexia Karpawich, 4th graders Madeline Benitez, Drea Buchman, Emilia Moritz, and brother-sister duo Max and Ellie Feldman, 4th and 3rd grade, respectively, and one fantastic teacher Jeanie Temeyer who have defied the odds and clinched a spot at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals being held at Iowa State University from May 22- 27, 2018.

North Beach Elementary is an International Baccalaureate School that supports thoughtful learning through risk-taking and collaboration.  Odyssey of the Mind is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to develop and encourage problem-solving skills in elementary through High- School students.

Each school year five (5) “long-term problems” or prompts are circulated to participating schools around the world.  Each team is required to select a problem and begin the challenge of solving it.  At the competitions, all teams are judged in 3 main areas: (1) effectiveness of their solution, (2) style effect, and (3) solutions to secret spontaneous problems given to the team on competition day.

This year North Beach Elementary’ s team chose problem number 5, “A Stellar Hangout”.  This placed the team on a journey that leads them to create a laugh-out-loud (LOL) script satirizing today’s use of social media. The team also created their own props, costumes, and a futuristic food truck which is the focal point of their Stellar Hangout.

On February 24, 2018, the NBE team won the Regional Competition and advanced to the State Competition held at the University of Central Florida, on April 14, 2018.

At the State competition, NBE competed against 21 other schools and took first place making them State Champions. The NBE team is the only team from the Tropical Region (schools in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties) to secure a spot in the World Finals.

Dr. Alice Quarles, the Principal of NBE, is extremely proud of the students and Ms. Temeyer (who is making her first trip to the World Finals), for all of their hard work and dedication in achieving this milestone and she knows that the NBE team will be #awesome!
