On November 30, 1985, the Miami Hurricanes crushed Notre Dame 58-7. Pictured above: Hurricane safety Bennie Blades intercepts a Steve Beuerlein pass intended for running back Allen Pinkett and returns it 61 yards for a touchdown. The play opened the floodgates to a mammoth blowout. The game marked the last for embattled Notre Dame head coach Gerry Faust. It was this game where Miami’s bad boy reputation of the 1980s truly began. CBS broadcasters Brent Musburger and former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian accused Miami coach Jimmy Johnson of running up the score. It also marked the beginning of a bitter rivalry which Notre Dame fans would later dub as the “Catholics vs. Convicts”. Miami finished with a 10-1 regular season record before losing 35-7 to Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl. To learn more about the history of the Orange Bowl, visit us at https://www.facebook.com/
