The New COVID Vaccine

Today, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber released a video message urging his residents to consider receiving the newly released COVID vaccine. Mayor Gelber received the vaccine this week and urged his residents to do the same or consult with their doctor or a physician they trust. Next week, the City will make available to Miami Beach employees both the COVID and influenza vaccines at City Hall. Mayor Gelber explained, “keeping our workforce healthy is good for them and the wider community.”

Mayor Gelber was critical of the recent announcement by Governor DeSantis and his current Florida Surgeon General recommending Floridians not take the COVID vaccine.  “I believe this was, obviously, more of a political announcement than a public health one; more likely intended to influence primary voters in Iowa than provide important health care advice to Floridians wondering what they should do,” said the Mayor.

In order to provide his residents with an alternative and more balanced view, Mayor Gelber reached out to Florida’s previous Surgeon General under Governor DeSantis, Dr. Scott Rivkees, who is now a Professor of Public Health at the prestigious Brown University. Dr. Rivkees, in a question-and-answer format, explained in the video why the facts and science support taking the vaccine.

Additionally, Mayor Gelber sent Governor DeSantis a personal letter registering his strong opposition to the advice the Governor is providing Floridians. In the letter Mayor Gelber pointed out that Florida now leads the Nation in COVID deaths and hospitalizations, and expressed his concern that the Governor’s actions “endangers thousands of Floridians, and ironically many of your most ardent supporters who incorrectly trust you would only give them advice that was in their best interests.”
