It is great to have the opportunity to share the important work the VCA does for the community and tourists alike. Via this column, our members will be sharing their point of view and the wonderful activities available throughout the year. The VCA has been working tirelessly to bring another tourist season filled with true and tried top tier events and some exciting new additions.
It is time to get your little black dress out, your sky high heels and your love of art and culture as we again start the season with the ninth edition of Art Basel Miami Beach takes place December 2 – 5, 2010. The four-day international art fair will include events such as a main art show featuring an exclusive selection of more than 250 leading art galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa exhibiting 20th and 21st century artworks by over 2,000 artists. Also this year is Art Basel Conversations, an intimate conversations with today‘s leading artists, curators, collectors and museum directors and an Art Salon Forum featuring wideranging hourly program of artist talks, book signings, panels and presentations.
The Oceanfront area is collaboration between Art Basel Miami Beach and Creative Time, the legendary New Yorkbased art organization specialized in public art projects. This year’s program focuses on the artistic and cultural scenes of four cities – Detroit, Mexico City, Berlin and Glasgow – with one night devoted to each city. “Garden Café” at the Botanical Garden, and collector’s tours to private collections and exhibitions. This event anticipates creating not only a platform for sales of contemporary and modern art, but to also reach out to other cultural and entertainment fields such as architecture, design, music, and film.
Added to the calendar is Design Miami now in its 6th year this event has become the premier design show in the world. This event will bring together the most influential design collectors, dealers, designers, curators and critics from around the world. Design Miami will have a number of events which will include the Collector’s Preview, Design Talks, Press conference and Preview, Vernissage and Nocturne, Opening Cocktail, Designer of the Year Dinner and Opening party. This is the event’s first year on Miami Beach.
At the core of the Design Miami forum is a marketplace for limited-edition design, amid which the most reputable international design galleries present curated exhibitions of museum-quality furniture, lighting and objets d’art, attracting the highest level of private and public collectors of historical and contemporary design. The galleries invited to exhibit in Design Miami/ deal mainly in exceptional design objects from the advent of Modernism (circa 1900) to the present day, with select galleries specializing in outstanding 18th and 19th century antiques.
Next time bring your dancing shoes and love of good wine and food. Miami Beach is a sensory experience.
